A common sight at our house.
Evan has been on breathing treatments since the middle of March when he had RSV. Every time he is about to be weaned off he catches a cold from one of us and is back to square one with the neb. Saturday night, the latest cold I thought he was recovering from, suddenly became worse. He spiked a temp. of 102.8, had fast respirations, and was grunting with nearly every breath. So at 3:00 am we headed for the E.R. They examined him and ran some tests. The attempts to draw blood were worse than the long wait we had in the empty waiting room. He didn't like to have his arms held down to begin with and his veins kept rolling away from the needle so they had to do quite a bit of poking around before they were successful on the second attempt. When we checked in his oxygen level was a little low and blood tests showed a high white blood cell count but his chest x-ray was clear so the ER doc gave him a diagnosis of "on-set of pneumonia", ordered an antibiotic shot that would last for 24 hours and sent us home with strict instructions to either see the pediatrician Monday morning or come back to the ER for a recheck. Evan improved quite a bit by Monday when we saw one of our pediatricians. His temp was down and his breathing was better. The pediatrician said that his lungs sounded good and suggested that he could have a sinus infection and have had an asthma flare-up that caused the problems Saturday night. He prescribed additional antibodies since his white blood cell count indicated that he had something more than just a virus and recommended keeping him one one of the breathing treatments until the end of the month when we go to our regular pediatrician for Evan's 6 month check up. Today he is doing even better. His temp. seems to be staying down even without Motrin or Tylenol and his breathing sounds normal most of the time. On another note... in the midst of all this last week...I discovered he has his first tooth and it looks like two more on the way!
